FAQs!

1) How do you rate the mattresses across different metrics (e.g. comfort)?

Everyone has different preferences and requirements; some might prefer a softer mattress, others might be suffering from back or neck pain. As comfort is a vague and subjective concept, we rated the comfort level by letting 100 randomly selected customers try out the mattresses blind, and giving each a comfort score. We thought this would be the best way to rate subjective metrics.

For the more objective metrics, we simply got information from the website or tested and analyzed the mattresses with our own equipment!

2) How long should a mattress last?

Haven’t changed your mattress in a long while because you think its fine? You are not wrong! Mattresses that are well made have a lifetime of an approximate 10 years with regular use.

In general, all-foam mattresses tend to have a shorter lifespan than hybrid mattresses because foam has a higher tendency to lose it’s shape and firmness over time. So if you are looking for a safer long-term purchase, we recommend going for hybrid or all-latex mattresses!

3) How do I know when to replace my mattress?

Stiffness and pain are just some outcomes of bad quality sleep, and these often depend on the quality of your mattress (amongst other things). If you face these symptoms, it is important to consider changing or upgrading your mattress before it affects your health in the long term.

Start replacing your mattress when you notice these signs of wear and tear as this can compromise your sleep quality:

• Sagging
• Rips
• Stains

4) What is a Mattress in a Box?

Mattress-in-a-box are mattresses that are compressed to fit in a box for easy delivery. These mattresses expand to a regular size once they are taken out of the box, which is quite a sight to behold for those seeing it for the first time!

This means less manpower is used for delivery and shipping, allowing users to generally get higher quality at lower prices (but only with the right brands).

Some customers are uncomfortable buying a mattress online without testing it in a showroom, which is why mattress-in-a-box companies tend to offer full refunds within a trial period of 100- 120 days. In general these refund policies CAN be trusted, because if these companies didn’t hold up to their end of the deal, it would be the end of them! So it’s in their interests to do so.

This is a nice development that has taken place in the mattress-in-a-box industry, thanks to competition amongst different brands.

5) Are all mattresses-in-a-box made equal?

No! They have their similarities but they are not all made the same. Some focus more on making a good product, others specialise more in marketing their product (no matter how good it REALLY is).

Which is why I decided to make this guide! To help you find the mattress that is actually good, in terms of the product itself, which is what really matters!

6) What is the best mattress, all things considered?

In the beginning we had a hypothesis on which mattresses would be the best, based on the websites and reviews online, but we were shocked at out actual ratings once we tried the mattresses themselves! The expectations that advertising creates are often quite different from the reality of the mattress itself.

All things considered, we consider Origin Mattress to be the best in the market!

First of all we found it more durable and of higher quality than some of the other better-marketed all-foam mattresses. Origin sells a hybrid mattress with latex, memory foam and springs, making it more cooling and durable in the long run.

The top layer of the mattress was also surprisingly soft and plush, it definitely felt like high quality tencel and was able to withstand our simulation of 10 years of use best.

The level of firmness was also closest to our research on what is optimal for the average population (2 other mattresses on the list also hit the same optimal level of firmness, but fell a little short on other metrics).

Combined with their user-friendly free delivery and 120 night trial, we think Origin is a safe choice, followed by the next best choice in terms of quality and comfort – Sleeping Duck.
